The way the world works in 2010; it’s virtual and uber social

This morning, I went into the WordPress admin for my agency’s official blog and noticed some new blog comments in “pending” mode. One of them really caught my attention. It was a trackback link from a blog called techipedia.com, which is maintained by a social media heavyweight by the name of Tamar Weinberg.

Sure enough, she had made mention of one of our blog posts in her list of the best marketing posts of 2009. That’s great news in and of itself, but I figured this was a good opportunity to cultivate a relationship. Tamar and I have never met in person but we have communicated via web forums like sphinn.com. Still, our connection was not overly strong in the grand scheme of things.

I went ahead and reached out to her via her blog’s contact form, thanking her for linking to us and also congratulating her on being a new mom (she makes mention of it on her blog bio). She responded within an hour or so and we proceeded to exchange various thoughts on parenthood and marketing via several email exchanges.

Does that make us best friends or lifetime business partners? Definitely not. Still, it’s these types of exchanges that inevitably lead to the mutual engagement that marketing types refer to as “social media” (note: this term gets thrown around a lot and is sometimes misrepresented but it’s core meaning is people connecting with one another in meaningful two-way conversation).

I have these types of virtual exchanges countless times, and they usually result in mutual gain for both myself and the individual I’ve crossed paths with. I suspect that this will be the case for Tamar and myself moving forward.

Heck, if nothing else, it’s already resulted in a couple of extra inbound links for Tamar’s blog!
